The OMA Awards

As part of its dedication to advance the marketing at-retail industry, POPAI Arabia stages objective contests and awards to showcase and reward the best the industry has to offer.

The annual Outstanding Marketing At-Retail Achievement (OMA) Awards contest is the premier award for the marketing at-retail industry. OMA recognizes the most innovative and effective in-store and at-retail displays which lift sales and make products memorable and enticing to shoppers.

The MENA version of the prestigious annual OMA Awards celebrates the best P.O.P displays' designs and executions in the region. This is an unmissable chance for industry professionals to show their skills and to get inspired. You could be a Gold winner.

The OMA Awards

As the industry’s oldest and most prestigious award program, the OMA awards contest has been recognizing the industries best practices for over 50 years. Entries compete for gold, silver and bronze honors.

Display of the Year winners are chosen from the gold winners in each division of the contest. The entries are judged according to standardized and equitable rules in a two-tiered process. Judges are divided into teams with representation from all areas of the industry including advertising, marketing, sales promotion, consumer product goods, retailers, producers and suppliers.

The first phase of the judging process is completed online using images submitted on POPAI Arabia’s Display Gallery. Judges review submitted images and case history forms and evaluate entry responses to questions focusing on marketing at-retail objectives, design and engineering, shopper engagement, retail experience, brand performance and sales results.

The second round of the judging process is done in person during POPAI Arabia’s POP Show where judges evaluate the actual displays to formulate a final score identifying winners in the particular range of categories.

Scores are based on the display's ability to increase sales, obtain retail placements, and work strategically to position the brand at the point of sale.

This is the industry’s largest and longest running awards contest. All entries become a permanent part of POPAI Arabia’s online Display Gallery.

POPAI’s Indian Statuette

The origin of the wooden Indian dates back to England in 1617, when small wooden figures were placed on countertops to represent tobacco companies, thus acting as the first marketing at-retail displays.

Cigar-Store Indians were designed to capture the attention of the people walking by informing them that tobacco was sold inside. The displays worked as customers often remembered the quality look and feel of a specific wooden Indian over the products the merchant sold.

The trade signs and shop figures that merchants customarily placed outside their stores enticed customers to spend their money on an ever-increasing range of goods during the 1800's. As other forms of marketing at-retail were introduced Cigar store Indians continued to successfully advertise products. While some shop figures were countertop models, the most convincing of these silent hawkers stood just outside the door.

As a tribute to the first form of Marketing at-Retail, POPAI (the Global Association for Marketing at-Retail) selected the Cigar Store Indian as the figure for its Outstanding Marketing at Retail Achievement Awards (OMA).
